About GROCERYchoice
GROCERYchoice is an Australian Government initiative. It provides practical grocery price information to help consumers find the cheapest overall supermarket chain in their area.
With the large number of grocery items available at each supermarket, consumers often find it difficult to determine which retailer offers the cheapest prices overall. GROCERYchoice helps consumers compare the general price levels of supermarket chains in their area.
Each month, GROCERYchoice publishes the price of typical grocery baskets for a range of supermarket retailers located in 61 different metropolitan, regional and rural regions across Australia. These retailers include:
- Woolworths/Safeway;
- Coles/BI-LO;
- ALDI (where present in a region); and
- Other supermarket retailers, for example IGA and Franklins.
Price information is obtained from an independent monthly survey of approximately 500 products from 600 supermarket outlets across Australia. The results of each monthly survey will be made available on the GROCERYchoice website on the first business day of the following month.
GROCERYchoice collects information about grocery prices alone. Consumers often consider a range of other important factors when determining where to shop. These factors include: the location and accessibility of supermarkets, the quality of fresh produce, the product and produce range, and the quality of service.
