Basket Categories

Approximately 500 grocery products are included across seven typical grocery baskets. There is also a basic staples basket which includes a variety of staple products from each of the other grocery baskets.

An independent product tester has been engaged to ensure that the grocery products in each of the baskets across supermarket retailers are of the same quality and therefore allow meaningful price comparisons to be made. This is necessary because the various baskets include a range of private label products that need to be matched to other brand or private label products available from other supermarkets retailers.

Meat & Seafood

Products include beef, chicken, lamb and pork products as well as bacon, ham and other processed meats. Also included are canned, frozen and chilled seafood products.
Note: The quality of some meat products can vary between supermarket retailers over time. Some differences in quality may exist and this should be considered when making price comparisons for this basket.

Fruit & Vegetables

Products include a variety of dried, fresh, packaged fruit and canned, fresh and frozen vegetables.

Dairy

Products include milk, cheese and other dairy products including ice cream, dairy snacks and yoghurt.

Breads & Cereals

Products include bread, muffins, crumpets, breakfast cereals, cakes, and biscuits. The basket also includes pasta, rice, noodles and flour.

Drinks & Other Snacks

Products include snacks, chips, chocolate, confectionary, soft drinks, waters, juices, cordials and energy drinks.

General Groceries

Products include eggs, fats and oils, food additives and condiments, jam, honey and sandwich spreads, tea, coffee and food drinks. Other products included in the basket are frozen products such as chips and deserts, soups, canned spaghetti, baked beans and baby food.

Household & Personal Care

Products include a range of household cleaning goods, pet food, pharmaceuticals and toiletries. Other household supplies such as batteries, toilet paper, clear wrap and foil are also included.

Basic Staples

This basket includes a selection of staple grocery products purchased by Australian households. It includes a variety of products from each of the other grocery baskets, for example milk, bread, fruit, vegetables and meat.

At ALDI supermarkets, owing to their smaller product range, not all of the 500 products included in the survey can be found. To address this, a smaller number of staple products have been selected and are presented as the "Basic Staples" basket. The Basic Staples basket is the only basket that lists an ALDI supermarkets price.
