Regions

To ensure GROCERYchoice is relevant to all Australians, the ACCC collects grocery price information in 61 regions across Australia including metropolitan, regional and rural areas. The regions have been selected to ensure the survey is conducted across geographically identifiable areas, which are relevant to the lifestyles and shopping practices of Australian consumers.

Metropolitan areas are generally broken down into inner and outer suburbs (North, South, East and West) and surrounding areas. Regional and rural areas across Australia are defined more broadly.

Exceptions to this regional breakdown have been adopted for Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. For these states and territories fewer regions have been created to better reflect their population and supermarket distribution.

In order to obtain prices for the full list of products in the survey the selection of supermarkets in some areas of Australia is necessarily focussed on the major regional centres. The specific locations which appear on the GROCERYchoice maps have been included as a visual representation of the survey’s 61 regions. Towns and suburbs have been chosen to illustrate where the region boundaries are located. The locations listed on the GROCERYchoice maps do not necessarily reflect where the survey is undertaken.
